Several sites have written that
S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl has gone gold, referencing the recent news by stalker-world.com.ua:

We got some information that GSC had recently finished its work on Stalker. The final build has the whole storyline, 20 levels and all of the features. With other words final v

Well, that means all left to do now is minor balance, bug-fixing etc. I just can't get why THQ desided to postpone the release date as far as fall 2006. WTF? To make it look more outdated? I think there will be lots of beautiful games coming out within 8 months. Sad

This does stink of Soldner all over again. Damn I played the leaked Beta on that and thought, a bit of polish, 6 months and the game will have potential, but that beta seemed to be where they stopped developing.

Again many people say, let them develope, give them time, its all your fault for making them release it early. But I honestly think that some developers are just not capable of putting on that polish. Why publishers don't have a seperate team to do this I don't understand.

Did anyone play a beta of STALKER? What was it like?

Jelster, that is an interesting idea, publishers could work more closely with the developers and introduce a seperate team towards the last few quarters or so of development to fish out any problems and refine things to the point of release quicker.
I still remain optimistic about this game though.

Jelster: The leaked beta was HIGHLY polished. A couple of crashes here and there, but overall a nice product that needs only a minimal of work to make it markettable.

Chode, I hope you're not referring to the dodgy 2215 beta leak Laughing
It was nice to see a sneak peak of STALKER from that build, but it felt way too retro.
That leak was a year and a half old though wasn't it?

The leaked 2215 build a year and a half old? Nope, you saw what developers had back in 2001 (maybe 2002), just a torn bit of what they had. No weather change, no shadows, no ragdoll, it's obvious that was antique, it IS retro.
And there was another leak I guess, but I chose not to see it (I felt a bit guilty when I played HL2 leaked build) Smile That's probably the one Chode spoke of.
Well, up until now Russian or Ukrainian devs haven't released a single solid FPS, lack of experience the reason I guess. Though HL1 was Valve's 1st game ever and they did make a legend. We'll just have to wait and see. Though I don't have too much optimism myself.

I think you's are mixing up build numbers.

There are 4 leaked builds (to date)

Build 1089, which was from the old "Oblivion Lost" concept. Aztec city, robots, etc.

Build 1096, most recognised build. Leaked around Christmas time 2003, had two maps, crashed if you shot the rats, etc.

Build 1154, not very well known build. Buggy, had basic vehicle physics, could also shoot crows dead.

Build 2215, which was playable at E3 2004. Multiplayer "demo".

Build 2215 was an amazingly well polished build. It had shadows, lights, a day-night cycle (with some quick modding to re-enable it), shaders, a buy system, radiation, anomalies, rag-doll, basic object physics, 4 maps, etc.

Ok, let it be so. I didn't really know a lot about these builds, I probably stumbled across 1096. Well if the 2215 was so polished, good for old stalker then! I still have a little hope deep inside that Stalker would be a revelation in FPS genre and will bring innovative gameplay. Ah, dreams...

So Chode, based on your experience with that "feature rich leak", is the game worth the hype/wait?
