Speaking at the Game Business Law Summit at SMU, Jason Holtman from
Valve was on hand to share Valve\'s philosophy on game pirates:
"There\'s a big business feeling that there\'s piracy," he says. But the truth is: "Pirates are underserved customers."

It’s an interesting idea, I was tempted to get that recent GTA:SA clone (I forget the name) for the PC.
With it on pre-order in the UK I found out the US got it something like 3-5 weeks earlier, found out the general end game user consensus was it was a horrible horrible console port as per usual these days so cancelled my pre-order without thinking twice.
It wouldn’t surprise me at all if many of the EU consumers that saw the yanks getting it a month earlier just pirated it. |

terrible idea....does that help piracy in the US? No. Why the hell would releasing a game at the same time world wide make anymore difference. Ppl who buy legit games would wait the extra time for the most part or pirate it and then buy it after its released. |

The point is that piracy isn't just "cheap bastards stealing from developers". It's also people choosing to pirate because the developers/publishers are failing to serve their needs.
His example merely points out how they can increase sales simply by doing a global release.
Beats the shit out of intrusive DRM and treating legit customers like criminals. |

They may as well have been treated as pirates when you can't legitimately play what you've bought because of intrusive DRM methods by way of internet.

I remember reading about Clear Sky having issues with the TAGES DRM not Steam's. Indeed I bought plenty of games during their end of year sale and had zero problems with activation, actually it was totally invisible as it should be.
But don't let that get in the way of a good Valve bashing. I mean after all, the guy is talking about Piracy and reaching out to customers who feel under-served. IMO he's totally right, I'm more likely to buy a game if I can download it, if the game is retail only or not released in my country the chances of me downloading the pirate version is much much higher.

LOL. Where are they being hypocritical? Seems you just want to bang on about how evil Valve is, even if it means you need to distort or ignore the facts. |
