i've been running AVG (www.grisoft.com) for a while but i've been noticing viruses slipping through here and there and also that it doesn't scan all of my files (in fact it doesn't scan a couple thousand, even on a "deep scan"). i just started using avast (www.asw.cz) and i'm really starting to like that alot.

right now i'm also using sygate personal firewall, spybot s&d, and lavasoft ad-aware for all other types of protection.

what suggestions do you have?

im using Avast, Sygate and Ad-Aware and everything is good and working!

I have tried all versions of firewall and AV and found these to be the best!

Sygate is the industry standard for software firewalls, so it must be good! Smile

i guess my whole problem right now is this:

also, the fact that AVG is only scanning 24066 files and my computer has a grand total of 44602 files, so it's only scanning 53% of the files on my computer. lame.

i'm about to uninstall AVG. after running several bootscans and updates for avast, i'm coming up with nothing. and AVG is coming up with nothing even after its resident scanner tells me it found something and to run AVG. WTF. you'd think that if the resident scanner found a virus that it would show up in a full virus scan right? right?!@? i'm about to just nuke my whole system once again.

and i entirely blame my asshole ex-roomate. his favorite website being fr33porn. if he didn't move out when he did i was going to password protect my computer and ban that sorry SOB. Very Happy

I'm currently starting to use the free version of Zonealarm, which does a pretty good job, you can try it out if you like:

i think that the BEST , PAID, firewall is Kaspersky Anti-Hacker. All the free ones are allmost crap.

there are various reviews on the net and the best free firewall is ZoneAlarm, which does exactly the same as a paid for software firewall! The only difference most of the time between paid and free is configurability, and other add-ons like anti-spam, and email protection etc

If you look at business reviews the best paid firewall is Sygate actually! Smile Kaspersky is good for AV, but not as good for Firewalls

i can reccomend buying a hardware firewall.
I've got a Linksys WRT54G that has firewall, router, 4port switch, Wireless AP. besides being a firewall it's usefull for a lot of other things - i think it was about $100(including 25% import taxes in denmark) at the time.
you can propably get something cheaper too.

i dunno why people starts talking about software when firewalls are mentioned... thats bullcrap Razz

cheap hardware firewalls like that one only physically block ports, they cannot regulate the flow of traffic through the open ports such as port 80! Software firewalls do regulate this traffic, so its better to have a hardware and software firewall.

Although the thing that you failed to mention is NAT, this means that when you access the internet the IP address that is viewed from the outside world is the routers one, which means if anyone wants to hack you, its not that easy as they need to hack the router to find the IP address of your computer behind the firewall. then tunnel through the router to your computer and then try to hack that. hence the best, most secure solution is to use a hardware firewall with NAT protection, and a software firewall for additional protection and regulating the traffic through the open ports!

sorry to preach! Smile

If you want to access the dark web then you should have VPN to operate. Read more info about https://www.ivacy.com/blog/dark-web-search-engine/
