Sony has said that it did not introduce the same radical new approach to games as the Xbox One for fear of damaging the ‘fragile’ retail market.

Speaking with MCV, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe boss Jim Ryan said that the company avoided blocking pre-owned games because of concerns about retailers.

“We understand the importance of used games for consumers and retail,” said Ryan. “We think the current model works and should not be tampered with.”

The company won praise at E3 from gamers and retailers for its refusal to introduce restrictions on used games.

Ryan said that while consumers had driven the decision, it’s main concern was for the retailers that it believes are a crucial part of the market.

“The retail ecosystem is rather fragile,” he continued. “It’s consumers that have driven the decision. But equally, trying to shore up a very fragile ecosystem in the retail area is something we are quite happy to do.”

Ryan also said that he hopes the momentum the console has gained since E3 will help the console regain the UK market from Microsoft.

“We have the building blocks in place, I hope to make a step change in the UK,” he said, speaking about the company’s launch plans for the PS4.

“Because over the course of the cycle I don’t think we got it quite right in the UK. We now have a number of things in place to help address that. And PlayStation 4 is hopefully the time all those things come together.”
