Windows 8.1 - Black screen after update / login - I had this just now (11th March 2015) after doing Windows update. Doing a system restore (Running 'rstrui.exe' from Task Manager) did not fix for me because my restore point was corrupted. This is what I did to fix the black screen with mouse pointer/cursor after logging into your account, which happened after doing a Windows Update:
- Press CTRL + ALT + DELTE and open Task Manager
-> FILE -> NEW TASK (run) - type: control
Now Open Control Panel and go to "Program and Features" (alternatively, you could open it directly from Task Manager by doing File > Run New Task > Appwiz.cpl)
- On the left-hand side, click on "view installed updates". Uninstall kb3035131.
- Once all the latest Windows updates are removed. Press CTRL+ALT+DELETE and Sign out.
- Restart Windows.
This got me back into Windows. Hope it helps.
update:
There's not much info on the Internet regarding this particular issue,
however there are some mentions of the use of StartIsBack or Classic
Shell, but we are not using them.

Has anyone encountered a similar experience? Any known causes or
fixes? What's the proper method to escalate this to MS? |

You can find out more details or new. I will not give the correct advice.
