Looks like 5 years old tech. Is that it? Seriously.
You can find even older titles like that - like the first Red Faction title from 2001. Not as pretty, but destructible pillars (and environment) was already there, with debris scattering about... You could make entire tunnels there - here is a minecraft clip.
Unreal seems to be devolving (or focusing on all the wrong things)...

Dunno, the focus is on realism?
It all comes down to the physics?
I'm not to deep into this, also don't play that much anymore. Grid maybe.
But considered the engines are being available to a very wide range of users, the possibilities for creating content is only a good thing. Only my 5ct. ;)
