HL2Fallout member, target_practice, recently e-mailed Valve's Gabe Newell for information on Half-Life: Source requesting a comparison shot between Half-Life and Half-Life Source. Doug Lombardi replied with these images.

Maybe you do you tea-drinking moron. I've talked to other people about it and they even think that it doesn't look good. Water in Half-Life 2 looks good, just not the water in that screenshot.

wow, you've talked to other people about it *claps*
no need for the shitty attitude you twit.
I was just jokingly implying you are exaggerating how bad you think the water is, there might be a reason for the way it looks like that.
When I first saw the screenshot I thought, wow cool HL1 using the source engine, I finally get to rekindle the joy of playing the original Half-Life.
Then you have to come here and spoil it with your extremely high expectations of supremely realistic water that actually pours out of your monitor screen for you to drink Rolling Eyes lol

Woo-hoo! Pixel-shaded air vents! Maybe Valve should redo the gameplay to something that doesn't induce narcolepsy.

Just noticed that if you look at the brown wall texture, the original one is more random and looks slightly more interesting where-as the new one is actually the same texture over and over, then mirrored Confused
That shows lazyness to be honest, oh and the water does look a bit weird CaptStar... you are right there, but I suppose maybe they were going for a 'strange' oily look because of the alien in the water perhaps? we'll all get to see the final result when it comes around anyways. Maybe the pic was taken with crappy hardware *an ATI card* haha sorry. lol
I'm currently an ATI user myself so all you fanbois can stay firmly seated.

Well, Source engine is nice feature, but don't tell me you expected Valve to put some efforts on HAL: Source? Maybe they had that on mind, but with all the problems (delays, "stolen" code etc.) it would be great if we could get Half - Life 2 as good as they promised it to be.

Also, some other games offered similar converting-to-the-new-engine, but it never worked like "one-click-convert" simply because it didn't look good.

Np, im not saying that the water should look realistic, it just doesn't look like water. More like melted silicon or a melted metal.

those shots are horrible. In the stress test demo included with CS:S, the water looks real. These are just horrid shots that give the game zero credit. Water also looks better with ATI card, I'm afraid to say.
