Quote: | Global sales of PCs have fallen to their lowest levels since 1994, according to global research firm IDC.
According to IDC's figures, 76.3 million PCs were sold around the globe during the first three months of this year. That is lower than at any point since the company started tracking sales in 1994.
IDC blamed a combination of factors for the figure. It said that Windows 8 had failed to revitalise the industry in the way that its maker Microsoft had promised. Sales of tablets and smartphones were also blamed for eating into the PC market.
Vice president of IDC Bob O'Donnell said that Windows 8 had not only failed to drive sales; it appeared to have slowed the market down.
He blamed the focus on enabling touch in traditional PCs, as well as the increased hardware cost in doing so, had made them a much less attractive purchase compared to tablets and smartphones.
IDC pointed to a fall in demand from the corporate sector. Companies used to refresh their PCs every three years on average. According to recent research, that figure has changed to once every five years due to increase use of technologies like virtualisation and cloud computing.
It also said the recession had seen budgets cut, and this has had a knock on impact on PC sales.
HP, once the largest PC maker, has seen its sales continue to fall. According to IDC, in the last three months, the PC maker saw sales fall by 24 per cent.
