The Mystery of the Druids
(hx) 09:49 PM EDT - Sep,24 2001

The Mystery of the Druids is 3rd-person mystery adventure game developed by House of Tales (German developer). You play role of Brent Halligan a New Scotland Yard detective who are instructed to investigate a series of mysterious murders called the Skeleton Murders which look to be linked to some sort of serial killer but are surprisingly enough linked to modern-day druids which leads you on a journey across England, France and finally into the past. The game graphics are great. Various real-world locations are highly realistic and convincing, and all scenes are covered in detail. No doubt there is so much to see! Only the characters in the game may be a touch shallow, although not enough to be a problem :) Also voice action is surprisingly very good, though Lucas Arts adventures still owns. However sound effects and music are all very good and really contribute to the atmosphere of the game.I could say the gameplay is more varied than most other adventure games, it's divided into two parts. The past and the present and later on in the game you get to play another character, a female anthropoligist. Because it's an adventure game, the most important thing are the puzzle. Well, the puzzles are nothing extraordinary, typically involving inventory combinations or object usage in the environment. However they can be sometime pretty hard (illogical)- so be prepared to think in very unorthodox methods and to spend ages trying every object in your inventory with each. The Mystery of the Druids features over 50 impressive locations from past and present, more than 360 interactive scenes, non-linear dialogues, more than 20 speaking characters, lip-sync dialogues by phonetic language analysis, 5 hours of language recording, high resolution 2D/3D graphics, 3D models with up to 1000 polygons, long soundtrack, mixed in real-time soundtrack and SFX in Dolby Surround. Despite the few criticisms detailed here, The Mystery of the Druids is the best adventure game that has been released since Escape from Monkey Island. If you like adventures and detective story, it's game for you. Download playable demo (48MB) which includes the opening chapter of the game and visit The Mystery of the Druids official homepage.

This game is ABSOUTE CRAP! This kind of thing will make adventure games disappear. Graphics is horrible (640x480), and it is slow too, because it does not accept most accelerated 3D hardware (I tried with Kyro II amd with a Geforce 3 Ti200). The puzzles are absolute nonsense, most times you must do things w/out ever understanding why. For example, at the end you must kill your team mate (and future girlfriend) and this will cause your enemy (the usual immortal bad guy, used to eat the flesh of its victims while they are still alive ...) to commit suicide!? Also, so many times you are supposed to take small little objects, very well concealed in the scene, having nothing to do with what's happening then, just because they will be necessary to go on in some future situation .. and if you forget to do that, you are going to be very frustrated, because you will have no hint about what is missing in your inventory. I am an adventure fan, I have played most adventure games I could find, and this is in my experience the worst adventure game I have ever seen.
