Ultimate Ride (hx) 02:46 AM CEST - Oct,03 2001
Ultimate Ride is a real-time 3D roller coaster game for the true roller coaster fans. In the game you can design, customize, test, ride and complete missions with a variety of roller coasters in your very own theme park, then experience it in the first person, e-mail it to your friends to ride and rate, or post on www.ultimateridegame.com to compete for "Rollergod Status."
Ultimate Ride offers two modes of play Imagineering Mode and Build Mode. In the first mode you play the roll of a roller coaster designer, several amusement park clients will seek you out and request designs that must meet a specific set of requirements. You have to successfully complete all of the Imagineering challenges to become already mentioned "Rollergod Status." The second mode will give you ultimate freedom to create any roller coaster configuration you wish (no limitation), so you are limited only by imagination.
The game features Roller Coaster Track Editor (create your perfect coaster piece by piece and manipulate the pitch, angle, acceleration and deceleration), three types of Coasters - Hanging or Top-Track Coasters, Classic Wooden Coasters and Modern Steel Coasters, three different themes - Medieval (with fire-breathing dragons, dwarves mines, dragon nests...), Crystal Empire (featuring airships, pipes/heavy machinery, steam, steam engines, and a vision of the future from the 1800's) and Outer Space (astronauts, space stations, and exploration vehicles for human inhabitation), four environments ( Mountains, Space, Underground Caverns, Engineering Grid), and over 30 Props to move, resize and theme the environment plus 20 hidden props hidden in various locations. Ultimate Ride has real-time 3D graphics, four camera angles!! (1st person, 2nd person, 3rd person, environment camera allowing the user to fly through the park and zoom in and out anywhere), three types of lightning (Dawn, Mid-Day, Dusk) and Real Physics.
The interface is so well done, even children will quickly put together satisfying creations, while adults (and hard core coaster fans) will be surprised how sophisticated their coasters can become. Overall, this game looks really cool, maybe insane in some moments :), however it's probably one of the best Roller coaster games I have ever played. Surprisingly Disney made this coaster game really very good. Download playable demo (38.9MB).
snd: 4/5 - great effects, lackluster music (at least for me) gfx: 5/5 -
excellent, real-time3D graphics, four camera angles!! playability: 4/5 -
great, Imagineering Mode and Build Mode, well done interface, online competition

Technologically Brilliant.
Playability Limited.
Lastability (depends on how many people you know that you can show the graphics to). Essentially, not very long.
Overall - smart "game", but not really a game. |

| Wibby | posted - Nov, 06 2001 - 12:43 | The graphics are average - I was disappointed by building it in a coaster editor and by the uninspired landscapes - I want to build coasters round mountains and up through volcanos, not the really thrilling up-this-bit-of-a-hill-mind-it-doesn't-get-too-exciting-now landscape it provides.
The coaster editor is an improvemnt on others control-wise, but it's still hard to see what you're doing when you get close to the end, and the coasters are just too implausible for real coaster fans with any knowledge of how they work. |
