Diggles: The Myth of Fenris
(hx) 11:32 PM CET - Mar,27 2002

Diggles: The Myth of Fenris is an oddball dwarf's real-time strategy game (also known as Wiggles in Europe), which combines tunneling exploration, base-building and resource collection with personal micromanagement. Diggles takes bits and pieces of Norse mythology and also adds a bit of disrespect and some silliness to create the recipe for its background story. Godfather Odin has chosen the Diggles to set out on a long and burdensome expedition to the center of the earth where the hound of hell, Fenris, spreads terror. Accomplishing this dangerous mission will take decades and involved many generations of dwarves. To prepare the Diggles for the crucial fight with Fenris, yu have to pass through four different worlds and over 30 different quests have to be solved, that involves to arrange a daily schedule for the dwarves by determining how much they work and what they do in their leisure time, teach dwarves how to forge weapons, cook mushrooms, raise hamsters, produce tools and invent machines. These mostly lazy little bastards sleep, eat, play cards, go bowling or to a pub. Sadly they can also die if they are too old. Like people in real life, male and female Diggles can even fall in love with each other. They have sex (don't worry - no porno in the game) and their childern getting their learned attributes, so how you can see there are also some mini-RPG elements. Although the game is played in full 3D, it looks a bit like a semi-3D - everything exists on the same 2D plane, but all characters, models, and scenery are entirely rendered in 3D. Look at screenshots, I could say that the playing field is a bit analogous of looking at sort of like a giant ant farm. That mean you can free rotate your camera in any direction, but your units can only move up&down / side to side. Also If you expected some fast-paced strategy action with plenty of fights rather forget it. This game is not violent, Dwarves are stupid and lazy creatures, they rather like eat and sleep :) So the first hours of playing you will probably try to tweak their work schedules, similarly to The Sims. Then you will focus on producing new base structures, building tools such as ladders, weapons and also cooking a variety of meals (oh yeah basic resource are mushrooms and hamsters) for your gang. Later you will able research, build breweries, metalworking structures, alchemical labs, and get another resources such as metals and alchemy ingredients. Unfortunately every action that your dwarves proceed takes almost forever, so you will spend more time by watching and waiting. I strongly recommend you to watch TV and play at once to don't get bored. Yeah sadly it's game for very patient people (like for some girls), I don't saying it's bad game, but am not so patient player. Despite the pace is very slow and multiplayer is missing, Diggles offers up some unique innovations of the traditional strategy genre. This game definitely worth a look. How I said, Diggles currently has no multiplayer, but I found most multiplayer scripts ready in the game directory, so we can suppose that developers will release patch that allow to play something more funny than Skirmish mode on the same computer. Download playable demo (115MB).

snd: 3/5 - awesome music, mediocre voice-acting quality, rare in-game audio effects
gfx: 4/5 - well rendered and colorful, nice lighting effects, semi-3D environment, painfully slow at 1024x768
playability: 3/5 - good only for patient gamers - the pace is very slow, nice sense for humor, easy controls - mouse, lots of micro-management, no multiplayer yet
genre: RTS
release: March 2002
developer: Innonics
publisher: Strategy First
Good
Overall: 70%

This game suck!!! At first i thought this game kicks ass but then it just got so slow and boring that after a week i just stoped playing it altogether. My gnome are so lazy that they'll starve to death before they cook any food for them selves.
