Star Wars Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast
(hx) 11:35 PM CET - Mar,29 2002

Star Wars Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast is actually the third game in the series, following Dark Forces and Star Wars Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II. The game once again follows the adventures of Kyle Katarn, a rebel bounty hunter who is strong in the force. Maybe you remember that in the first game Kyle left the Imperial Army to join the Rebel Alliance and in the second he became a Jedi Knight.  Jedi Knight II takes place nine years after the events of Jedi Knight, and Kyle has given up the ways of the Jedi in order to become a mercenary. So you assume the role of Kyle as you employ a unique mix of weapons, force powers and of course your light saber in both single and multiplayer modes.   It's really hard to review/rate this kinda over-hyped game, but I wouldn't say this is just like any other FPS game. I know that Star Wars fans will love this game but from what I have played, I am not impressed at all. The first part of the single-player is really pretty boring, in the second part  the game gets so much better after you get your light saber and force powers (including choke, mind trick, lightning, and push), since this moment it's like playing a different game. Yeah that mean that Kyle doesn't start out the game with any of his force powers, or even the light saber. Anyway even with light saber, it's mostly about to find a certain button, door or secret room in the dark. Also the jumping puzzles pretty sucked. Really frustrating enough, because there's more finding than shooting. Since I was born to raise hell I prefer an instant action! Also I'm not a Star Wars fanboy by any means so isn't big surprise I more like MoH: AA, RtCW and my favourite one - Serious Sam 2. However don't bitch me for that, it's just only my opinion :) Honestly I couldn't find anything  innovative in this game except the light saber mouse cursor which is really cool. Definitely the sword fighting is really amazingly well done, but that's all. While most gamers expected the focus on single player part of the game, seems the multiplayer is the part I liked the most. Yeah  multiplayer is awesome though seemed to be a little boring at start, but it definitely isn't!  Jedi Knight 2 multiplayer includes 11 maps, a slew of player models, and several game modes (including Free For All deathmatch, Capture the Flag, Duel modes, and more). In addition, server administrators can limit or disable force powers as well as turn on a lightsaber-only option for all game modes etc. Overall, Jedi Knight 2 is 100% the best PC Star Wars game in years so if you're a fan of Star Wars, buy this.

snd: 5/5 - sounds are top-notch, atmospheric music plays throughout both single player and multiplayer action, weapon sounds fit
gfx: 4/5 - pushes the Quake III engine into new extremes, textures and characters are fairly well-done, amazingly well done sword fighting, impossible to skip long intro movies, disproportionately sized objects in the world (such as ships)
playability: 4/5 - atmosphere is 100% Star Wars, compelling story, frustrating single player may disappoint some, multiplayer is great - 11 unique maps and 28 different playable character models
genre: sci-fi FPS
release: March 2002
developer: Raven Software
publisher: Lucas Arts
Very_good
Overall: 82%

Play it. Love it. Use the force. This game kicks ass.

As usual Lucasart did a good job with graphics, level design and sound however one thing bothers me IMMENSLY... the 'lightsaber-drop-sound'... sound more like a complete sword (katana, claymore) hitting concrete than a cylinder falling onto metal...

noxinposted - Mar, 30 2002 - 08:34
Jk2 is no where near JK, the game, level design is childish, hyroglyphics? column puzzles? whats a turret doing inside a base? The Imperial base is just so unconvincing, totally lame. Granted I haven't finished the whole game yet, but the first 2 levels certainly didn't impress me to make me go on. Im going back to Jedi Knight. Screw Raven for f**cking this up so badly.

koblongataposted - Mar, 30 2002 - 12:51
the level design is laughable, puzzles are made for puzzles sake, most them don't make sense at all. i have to admit that i HATE jumping puzzles, and JK2 is full of those, extremely frustrating.

Marcposted - Mar, 30 2002 - 13:48
The Designers of some levels should ***. I hate those god damn "jump platform" maps.

Enable 3D Sound In Jedi Knight 2 What you need to do: Open up the the config files (for SP or MP mode) in notepad (located e.g. C: Program Files LucasArts Star Wars JK II Jedi Outcast GameData) Adjust the following setting so that it is enabled: seta s_UseOpenAL "0" to seta s_UseOpenAL "1" This option is not available ingame so you have to do it manually.

Anybody know how to make the refresh rate better in XP playing this?? currently, nauseau sets in about 30 minutes, then technocolor yawns.. Of course, it might just be the quake 3 engine....

jeez, where are those huge architectures, canyons that made me affraid of heights and real sized spaceship that impressed me so much in JK1??? everything seems shrinked to 1/4 of the size in Jk2!!! and this isn't an advanture game (and a bad one)! why there are always meaningless puzzles in every single level that require me to running back to start point and try all sorts of stupid jumps!!! all of those don't make sense! they certainly mistaken the term "innovative" (standard set by justin chin in JK1) with the term "awkward" (those stupid level designers at raven must thought make it as awkward as possible is the way to innovate)!!

xcposted - Mar, 31 2002 - 20:24
stever > the refresh rate thing your after: are you using a geforce gfx card? if so you need to find the refresh rate fix. only works with the latest fixed det driver

i cant be arsed with lucas arts get rich quick schemes ! first they made a mockery out of the original star wars with the new crappy kiddy episodes (you have to be under 10 to enjoy it )and now they cant even make a good enough conversion from cinema to arcade shoot em up ! all WE GAMERS want is stuff like SOF 2 with multiplayer support cause thats the only thing that will make it last MULTIPLAYABILITY !!! Not fancy graphics and a TITLE !!

Erbozposted - Apr, 01 2002 - 01:18
This Star Wars shit has been milked like a six nippled cow, the shit has always been boring, but hey they (LucasArts) have bought the rights to the Star Wars titles, so they have to earn it back, even if the games suck arse, they just don't give a shit.

Anyone get excessive choppiness after loading a game after dying in the single player? I'm running the game on very high settings and everything runs smooth until I need to quick load . . .and then it gets damn choppy and unplayable. Anyone know of anything?

Evil_Messiahposted - Apr, 01 2002 - 16:19
Ugh! I haven't played the first JK but there was so much hype behind JK2 i couldn't pass it up... I will admit that the puzzles do get a bit frustrating, but the levels themselves are very nice and interesting. Also what were you expecting in an adventure game... in all my life, I have yet to play an adventure game that DOESN'T contain a puzzle, the Tomb Raider series comes to mind... The models are beautifully rendered and all the settings just fit star wars very well. One of my favorite things about the game is the big epic music, it actually makes you feel like you are in a Star Wars movie (the good ones, not EP 1). Anyways this is my opinion, so you flamers out there don't need to piss on me.

Magikposted - Apr, 01 2002 - 16:45
Overall I liked the game, Once I got the lightsaber that's pretty much the only weapon I used. I felt that the storm troopers could have been a bit smarter, but isn't that the case w/ all AI? Of course my difficulty setting was only Jedi, perhaps they are smarter w/ higher difficulty. What really impressed me we the light saber combat gfx & sound, the white flashes and sound effects reproduced the movie effects very nicely. Also in the yavin marshes w/ the rain hitting the light saber and fizzeling, very cool effect. The only thing I would have liked to have seem more of was model dismemberment. If you throw your light saber, and it hits a trooper in the head, his head should come away from his neck. Hands and arms coming off gets a little old after a while. Overall though I had fun playing JK2.

Mystik64posted - Apr, 02 2002 - 00:51
I really enjoyed this game. Admittedly I do occasionally get sick of the puzzles, but if you really hate them that much, just download a walkthrough. Unlike most of the other people here, while I enjoyed the game more after you got the lightsaber I still thought the first few levels were fun too. I thought the AI was pretty good, even if there were a few glitches. The multiplay's great too though. I think Raven did great on this.

TrickClawposted - Apr, 02 2002 - 19:27
Most likely the editor played only the first three levels. Read GameSpot's review of JKII. There it received a 9/10, and righteously so. You CAN skip the intro movies, contrary to what GameGuru's reviewer said. Just press Ctrl. Also it is ONLY the first few levels that have exceeding numbers of jumping puzzles and such. After that you receive the lightsaber and the game changes totally. Again, see GameSpot review for more info.

hxposted - Apr, 02 2002 - 23:26
To TrickClaw: I like to see some GameSpot hardcore readers here :) However how I wrote in my review - I'm not a Star Wars fan. I really didn't play such frustrating FPS like this one very long time and trust me I finished this game in 2 days before the review. Ad CTRL key, this key really doesn't work on my computer, dunno why. I couldn't skip movies.

I have to say Jedi outcast is one of the best games around at the mo........and when you get the lightsaber it's gets even better!!!!!!!!!!!

DiDGEposted - Apr, 08 2002 - 00:35
Some annoying bits that restict the flow of the game... ie obscure tasks that need competing. Shame about the lack of light emmitance from the sabre and other weapons, this was a big part of the previous games.

Jedi Nightposted - Apr, 10 2002 - 01:04
To all you nay sayers out there, I have to partially agree with you. It stinks at the beginning, but once you actually get to BE a jedi, with the lightsabre and force powers, it's a whole new ballgame. You can slice and dice with the best of them, and rip through opponents as well as do some kick ass manuvers, fencing, and acrobatics. Being a JEDI is definatly all its hyped to be. Just wait and see

+++HardTraxDigger+++posted - Apr, 12 2002 - 21:19
Well hamsap, You first have to type " devmapall " into the console i believe, this enables the cheat mode, then typ in the cheat again to disable it. ---------- SO , just saying that this game rocks, the light saber is cool and wiping out entire bases with this puppy gives a pleasure ! Just too bad the enviroment,( except the objects you have to use) isn't that interactive. And soumtimes the sound plays too loud in cutscenes and you can't understand their words. For the rest, it's a good game.

Cheenahposted - Apr, 15 2002 - 20:17
To all readers of this page: ignore the postings from people that have not gotten past the first 3 levels (which is just about everyone that disses the game). After the first 3 levels, once you get your saber and become a jedi, the game ROCKS. Everyone finds this out for themselves once they play the game a little. You gotta make it through the first annoying puzzle/jump levels.

Vince Pledgieposted - Apr, 16 2002 - 01:27
at gamespot, they mention a cheat "/thedestroyer", that will give you a double edged light saber like darth maul, but it doesn't seem to work in single or multiplayer. does anyone know any details here?

The textures in the game are fucking 256 colors details...in conclusions the game isn't very good, try multiplayer is very fun!!!!!

I have seen this in multiplayer, and I want to know how to do this also. Thx.

I was absolutely shocked when i saw it i just played first and second levels then bored This game is all about multiplayer and saber challange it also have bots WHICH is a MUST in FPS games and most developers dont care about it Good graphics not bad saber control funny bots but the last patch just KILLED the game

TarbuckTimposted - May, 31 2002 - 02:36
To get the double lightsaber in multiplayer. Turn off your lightsaber so your holding it in your hand. bring down the console by holding shift and pressing ¬` (The key next to 1). Type devmapall. Then turn your lightsaber on. then turn it off again. Bring the console down and type /thedestroyer. You may have to do it a couple of times cause it is annoying. Cheats must be enabled in multiplayer.

Look, the game kicks major butt. The duels and the saber combat are very realistic. Oh and to the guy that was complaining about what the dead saber sounded like when it hit the ground, STFU! Damn your mom must have abused you. Who cares, that is one sound bite. I mean why don’t you take a class in astro physics and tell us how unrealistic the light saber sounds when in rips through trooper PVC. Ass. Anyhoo, I love the game, if you don’t like the puzzles, then cheat. In SP press [shift]+[~] to bring up the counsel, and then type in "HelpUsObi 1" to enable cheats. (And to [email protected], you need to type this to enable cheats, to disable cheats). Although I liked the puzzles, if you’re a little kid with no mental capacity, then type in NoClip, and fly. (Jedi's can fly right?) Also after you beat the game, be sure to go back and cheat. For instance you can type in the cheat "g_saberrealisticcombat 1" and cut troopers to little pieces. Also, when people bump into your saber, they die, just like a real saber. Oh and Katarn is a bad ass mofo. You can do cool moves, like tap: forward + jump + primary - to do a cool flip over an opponent (usually slashing though their head). And by walking forward and strafing against a wall, you can run along the wall by jumping, and holding all three keys down (forward+side strafe+jump). Again, I loved the game. To all of you that didn’t, I’m sorry if the puzzles made your head hurt. =/~

The game is insane. The physics engine in the multiplayer part of the game is insane. If you really want to get the most out of this game, learn how to win in multiplayer with other humans online. There is so much complexity to learning how to correctly fight in multiplayer that once you finally do, you have much more of a sense of achieving something, then you get from the draggy, weak ass single player part of the game. And there are multiplayer maps that look as good as any game out there, because the designers put better graphics into them. The only mistake raven has made, is softening the force/physics in jk3 because of all the whiners that are too stupid to play in jk21.02mp. Send all brainless respones to me@dev/null
