Unreal Tournament 2003
(hx) 03:27 AM CEST - Oct,10 2002

So there's Unreal Tournament 2003, sequel to Unreal Tournament released four years ago. Does it live up the hype, the constant improvement of the series? Was it worth the wait? Now, after a couple days of playing I already know the true - UT 2003 looks and plays really awesome! There's everything what you want from this type of game - exciting, fast-paced&furious&frantic.... nonstop combat and impressive graphics. Q3A fans will _definitely_ love it because UT2003 is Quake 3 on steroids!

Graphics

The most immediately noticeable change is the graphics, which have undergone a complete overhaul. UT 2003 has the best graphics engine to date. Everything is extremely crisp and the textures are first class. Levels look impressive, especially the expansive outdoor environments with rocky outcrops, and patches of grass, trees and other vegetation. Also weapon effects definitely rock, real-time lighting and shadowing and particle effects will impress you immediately. UT 2003 is undoubtedly one of the best-looking game to hit the PC yet. Another great innovation of the game is The Karma Physics engine. Due to the skeletal animation system and the high poly count, you will be able to experience the best collision detection system available.

Weapons & Improvements

The weaponry is more or less unbalanced, unlike UT's carefully balanced weapons.  There are new weapons: Assault Rifle (old Enforcer from UT), Flak Cannon (still an awesome weapon), Lightning Gun (Sniper Rifle from UT combined with a Rail Gun), Minigun, Rocket Launcher (integrated grenade launcher is gone, the secondary fire will now fire up to 3 rockets), Shieldgun (replaced the impact hammer), Shock Rifle( looks like the shotgun from Quake), Ion Painter (tag an area to be decimated by the Ion cannon),  Ion Cannon (2 terawatts of ionised plasma), Ball Launcher (weapon is for Bombing Run), Biorifle ( fire blobs of green goop), Link (similar to the plasma rifle in UT), Translocator (a teleportation device but you can use it only 5 times), Redeemer (most powerful weapon in the game). There are other small features which makes this game great.  The ability to double jump will help you to dodge rockets and bursts of lightning from the bots. Also the implementation of adrenaline is an interesting new feature. When you collect 100 adrenaline pills, you can perform keyboard combo moves including speed, invisibility and boost.

Single Player

Single player mode allows you to play offline with and against computer-controlled bots in a ladder-based tournament or in single matches. The bots do a very competent job in simulating human players (unlike dumb-bots in Battlefield 1942) and might give you a fair challenge. Of course, hard-core players might find them simple opponents to fight, but anyway they're perfectly reliable teammates when you set up just an instant action game. You can also give the bots orders in team games, and they'll effectively carry them out. (sadly there's apparently no easy way to bind commands to single keys). The single-player mode features various stages: Team Deathmatch, Capture The Flag, Double Domination (a new game mode, the team must capture both domination points for 8 seconds before points are awarded) and the best one - Bombing Run (two teams fight over possession of a "ball," earning points by chucking it through /or walking into/ an opponent's goal).

Multiplayer

Needless to say that Multiplayer is best part of the game. You simply need an internet connection or LAN, and click either Play Online/LAN or Host Multiplayer and go! UT 2003 offers over 60 models to choose from (each character features their own set of strength, weaknesses and attitudes), 15 (Team) Deathmatch maps and 6, 7, and 9 maps for Double Domination, Bombing Run and respectively Capture the Flag. The full roster of modes includes Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Capture The Flag, Bombing Run and Double Domination. Double Domination is incredibly fun because there will be many times when right before your teams about to score the other team will take it back for a "last second save". There's a good new for "modem" people, UT 2003 has nice polished netcode, so you can play this game even trough dial-up connection. That's great because I don't have a broadband connection too. While there isn't much new gameplay modes in UT 2003, you can at least tweak the gameplay a bit using mutators, a special "mini-mods" that you can activate when you set up a server. There a bunch this time around dozen (Vampire, QuadJump, InstaGib, Team Regeneration ...), some are useful, some not so much.

Overall

I'm pretty sure that some will love it and some will hate it. But I really like UT 2003, though it doesn't bring anything new to the field of online shooters. UT 2003 was definitely worth the wait and it's probably the best $40 purchase you will make busy for a long time.Adding even more value to the package, UT2003 includes both the powerful UnrealED level editor and a full-version Personal Learning Edition of Maya. Needless to say, there will be MANY mods for this game. For more info visit UT 2003 homepage and download playable demo

After playing the demo i've noticed an improvement in speed and gfx but its the gameplay that sux BIG TIME ! Why couldnt EPiC stick with humans as in UT but they used robots, and robosuits which is 2 scifi for my liking ! Imagine Tactical Ops 2 with the new UT2003 engine , what cool GFX and gameplay that would be, not this triple jumping robotic moving 1tonne metalic machine !!!! Sry Epic ppl like me expected UT with bigger, better maps and cool HUMANs with realistic URBAN & Military weapons !!!!! not ray guns & rocket launchers thats soooooooooooooo 90's !!!!!!!!!

this is superb, great gameplay, graphics and sound. needs a good pc to run it mind - but if you have one its well worth it. believe the hype!

Great game but sound support sucks. I hate it when a developer spends most of their time simply supporting Creative Labs and then forgets about the other users who don't use Creative Labs. I got a Hercules card and the sound just doesn't compare to Live Platinum or Audigy. For this reason alone I am not buying the game. I borrowed my friends to try it out only because when I read the 'recommended setup' on the box it stated Creative Labs sound card. Sorry, I'm not buying a game that gives me cheap ass sound with a non-Creative card. If this game had anymore advertising I'd be sick. Look at the intro, Nvidia?? then select EAX a big Creative poster for EAX HD. Like, make me puke. Big mistake to leave us out Epic.. It will reflect in your sales and your continuing products sales. Thank god the reviewer here tested with other hardware and still gave the game a 9/10! Good work. =/

wtf lardass? ut is MEANT to have unrealistic gameplay thats the whole point - How many fuckin realistic games have come out in the last 2years? too many if you ask me, actually ut2003 is the first non-realistic fps for along time, and no humans? stop playing the demo you retard and get the full version then comment

thank fuck someone else thinks lard ass is one of the biggest pricks around. all he ever does is shout his mouth off at other peoples opinions while trying to force his on everyone else. what a dickhead. he moaned at me for trying the demo of battlefield 1942 and not liking it when he has done exactly the same with probably the biggest game of the year. get a life lard ass and stop pissing everyone off who reads this website

chuckle i aint forcing no 1 to do anything i just said whats on my mind ! now if thats 2 much 4 u then hey buddy u need to CHILL out ! We will see how long this game will last i reckon that as soon as some 1 has produced a human Tac Ops mod then it'll explode just like in UT ! Mark my words buddy ..........and mark them GOOD !

Salad_Tosserposted - Oct, 11 2002 - 00:19
The only thing more realistic would be to start killing real people on the way home from work. This is, by far, the best PC game ever released. No other game can touch its graphics and sound. In my opinion, you are all retards!!!

Prisoner 849posted - Oct, 11 2002 - 01:03
/me looks at salad_tosser and lard ass. Yeah yeah, lots of over-opinion from chimps with egos. Look, if you don't like it - mutate it! IMO - In My OPINION - lots of things in UT2003 suck. Built in bunny hoppping. The grenades on the machine gun are like bouncy firecrackers. The bio rifle looks like a scuba tank. There's no Ripper. The lightning gun - too slow and anyway is there some *law* against shooting and staying hidden??? Well I could go on (and on) but hey, I'll spare some people the abuse. What I'm going to do is go and write a mod or a mutator and make my own stuff. Why don't you?

Lard Assposted - Oct, 11 2002 - 01:23
[email protected] your comments on "The only thing more realistic would be to start killing real people on the way home from work" ! well guess what BUDDY, the running with scissors ppl have created POSTAL 2 so you can do that shit online, cool ! Hey so if i got a double chin and 45" waist and hitting the 20stone mark, im a lard ass and im proud of it ! Better 2 burnout than FADE AWAY !!!!!!!!!

Phreezer Burnposted - Oct, 11 2002 - 02:10
This game will take some getting used to, the graphics are great and it is a bit of a change from the realism games but I'd like to see a medal of honor type mod soon. My take time away from my Quake 3 playing. I checked my log and I have over 3 months play time!

This game is GREAT and does exactly what it's suppose to do. It's not intended for all audiences. If you want strategy/tactical/real world sim then get Operation Flashpoint. Also, STOP all your DAM complaining about the game. Think of all the excellent mod's and games that going to start appearing soon because of the openness and strength of the UT2003 engine. Bloody hell, some of you people are so dam narrow minded, it makes me sick. I designed maps in UT and can't wait to start mapping in UT2003. Thank God that Epic and DE is so open with their engine and utils that come with the game. Be GLAD people!

Lard Assposted - Oct, 11 2002 - 14:02
ScreamingElectron easy dude as i said b4 until there is a Tactical Ops human based game with real weapons mod for Ut2003 then it'll explode and thats what made UT so great look at Tactical Ops the team behind that sold it to Infrogrames so need i say MORE !!!!!!!!!

A game feedback section, eh? Well it's beginning to look like a fuckin' GAY feedback !!! Need 'a boyfrend' Jesus - [email protected]??---go find a more suitable site.---THIS IS GAMEGURU----NOT GAYGURU. And we all know that after releasing a product every developer company is watching your feedback!!and you know why???----TO SEE YOUR REPORTS---and to fix some bugs most of you dislike---increasing the general good looks of the game!!But what will epic see when they come here???----dog-boyfrend-squirrel fuckers??---riiiight.So feedback should BE REAL feedback---if we want developers to make bugfree nice games.Games like ut2003----it's awesome --not bugfree of course---yes, it lacks assault mod from ut, a good ol sniper rifle & ripper----but it's still a marvel! And please people---let's do a little less arguing and simply express our opinion (feedback) Thanx.

Hey Tim, the developers did not leave you out with your pentium 100 Mhz, ok? Games nowadays tke more power to run. UT2K3 is just the first of many games like these. If you don't upgrade your computer in the next... oh... two minutes, you'll never be able to play new games coming out. The engines they use to power the games are simply too much for such primitive computers. By the way I have the game and love it. the best feature is definitively the Karma engine. I could spend hours killing myself in Bombing - Anubis (anyone who died while trying to score will know what I mean) just to see the engine at work.

Lard Ass you're a fuckin idiot. Get a clue!! Not everyone wants to play a 'real life' type game. I know this seems beyond you, but a lot of people actually LIKE fantasy-type games. They enjoy the robots and rocket launchers. Don't bash a game just because it's not exactly what you like, and don't assume that everyone will flock to a Tac Ops mod, I sure as hell won't.

KVCComputersposted - Oct, 14 2002 - 21:39
UT2K3 is by far the best looking game right now, but it sort of lacks the depth of UT. I miss the assault maps, a goal besides killing and putting a ball through a "net" Haven't had any major technical problems with it yet, besides a very long time connecting to a game over a LAN. ...and I agree with Daeva, some people prefer fantasy to playing army games.

DooMposted - Nov, 03 2002 - 09:42
You clowns are just buying this crap to showcase what your "l33t video card" can do. UT2K3 contains no new, totally fantastic gameplay features that I can see from the last one, it's just a graphic overhaul. In fact, as one person already mentioned, it REMOVED features from the original. If they had added new gameplay features, THEN it deserves the hype. As it is, Game of the Year goes to Age of Mythology so far. Argue that one, because if you disagree you're automatically wrong as it is. Have fun bickering, ladies. By the way, I can't believe some of you actually paid for UT2K3. Suckers.

Well I prefer the original UT. This seems to have become a quake clone now and I never liked the silly looking opponents much prefer the human look. But it will keep the kids happy LOL!!

besides excellent graphics and maybe sound, this game sux. its like playing playing a pretty quake2...movement is unrealistic....maybe that's why its called unreal. btw, postal2 is the best game ever.

Adam Antposted - Nov, 16 2002 - 01:42
The game is great but i think that there isnt anything new about it exept the graphics and some new weapons - the gameplay stays the same - My friend bought the game and we played it 4 like an hour and then we installed Ut1 instead....

NJposted - Nov, 18 2002 - 11:53
i just rate the game to the max. But there are some downfalls. first is that there are no assault missions and the second IS THAT DAMN NARRATOR (what ever you wanna call him) He speaks like hes in a bugs bunny game!!!! i prefer the old narrator with the deep voice

Emperor Magus Caliguposted - Nov, 22 2002 - 00:12
The Narrator definitely Sucks, he sounds like a gameshow host and gets very annoying in CTF. But thank god for the ability to tone him down some, the old narrator was definitely better. I like the game, but has a very Quakeish look and feel to it and that I dont like.

GruvWizposted - Feb, 02 2003 - 03:30
C'mon guys ... I think all of us got too much cafein expecting a huge absurdely whatever sh*t of improvements over UT on UT2003, right ? I mean, we got too much time looking on the clock counting those lazy seconds passing by ... Well, that wasn't worthy at all, for me ! If you don't have a Pentium 4 2gHz or something similar, and a GeForce 4 Ti4200 or someting better, I'm afraid to say that you'll not be able to turn averything on on Details Menu and run the game like you used to dream about ! The gameplay is way less adictive then the first UT ! That's for sure, even worse for guys like me that have a wackle sound card ... The shots sound like cotton balls, and it's really frustrating ! The UT "feel" is gone ! It ,once more, proves my statement : "Better a great gameplay with great sounds and great grafics then poor fun and marvelous graphics (heavy like a whale going uphill) and picky sound system..." There's no more real fun on this game ! Only get a little stressed, but that's all ! Too easy and too heavy for the genre ... I agree with all those that still keep the first UT on the "Best FPS" on this field (cyber-robotic, like som said)... Regards, GruvWiz

Bobposted - Feb, 16 2003 - 18:36
I have the recommended hardware (Athlon 1Ghz, 256 RAM, Geforce 2 Ti). Still some maps go with something like 25 fps sometimes(e.g. DM-Plunge, CTF-Face3). I am trying to figure out a way to fix my frame rate(spent some hours doing that already). Ofcourse it can't be helped since i tried everything and now I should upgrade. Point is this should be the minimum requirements. Telling people this is the recommended is cheating and lying and this suck. When you say recommended one expects at least to run every map at low detail with everything off 16 bit color 640x480 etc. I wonder how one with the minimum requirements is supposed to play the game without causing serius damage to his eyes.
