Hegemonia: Legions of Iron
(hx) 03:24 AM CET - Jan,10 2003

Hegemonia: Legions of Iron is a 3D real time strategy game developed by Hungary developers Digital Reality - the makers of the award winning Imperium Galactica series of games. The story begins in the not too distant future, where Earth and the Colonies (which is represented by the strongest independent one, Mars) are in a serious conflict. In the beginning of the game, you can choose any side, either Earth or Mars, but the real challenge that of conquering space "outside" the borders of the solar system can only begin, once Humanity is united again. That's why your first task is to restore peace in the Solar System. Then you will need to colonize the surrounding systems, build up your forces and later handle the issues which come from the appearance of aliens...

Hegemonia features two different campaigns, three races (Mars humans, Earth humans and Solons) each with distinct characteristics and specialties, over 40 different battleships, a huge technology tree (200 inventions for you to research), spying system, heroes management, wormholes enabling multi-system battles, 20 minutes of full-motion video (FMV), and up to 8 players in multiplayer (LAN/Internet) with the following modes: cooperative, campaigns, scenarios, skirmish, cooperative campaign.

Although some elements of Hegemonia's presentation are highly reminiscent of Imperium Galactica 2, Hegemonia isn't simply a clone of Imperium Galactica 2, even isn't simply clone of Homeworld. In fact, it plays as a cross between Imperium Galactica 2 and Homeworld which is a pretty good thing really - I could say that Hegemonia is easily the most complex offering in its genre. Unlike Imperium Galactica 2, you are not inundated with micromanagement, you only have to keep an eye on your money, research, and your fleets. Later you will also have to build colonies, set taxation levels and even form trade routes. If you can handle these, you can be a very successful commander :)

One great feature is that the campaigns let you carry over heroes, technologies, and a few of your fleets from the mission before. There are four types of heroes: military commanders, governors, scientists, and spies. They all can have different abilities, which improve as they get experience. Hero units that gain experience points during conflict and other critical situations. High level heroes will have improved skills that can affect whole solar systems. The skills have wide variety from simple weapon improvements to special spy mission bonuses.

Hegemonia also offers a skirmish mode for play against the AI and humans, as well as cooperative multiplayer. I can't help feeling that if they'd added a skirmish mode with random star system generation Hegemonia would have had an amazingly long-lived appeal. Anyway, the normal multiplayer mode is extremely interesting and tense. Needless say that multiplayer is definitely much more fun than single player portion of the game, especially the co-op mode, meaning you can get 1 to 7 friends and play through the game together.

Many people have wanted to know if Hegemonia is better than O.R.B and vice versa. Well, Hegemonia shouldn't even be compared to O.R.B. In my opinion it is more like Conquest: Frontier Wars or so. I liked both games, only O.R.B costed me more time than I expected :) For the beginner, Hegemonia is much easier to play. It's no wonder that there isn't a tutorial in the game. But don't fear I'm pretty sure that you will need only a couple minutes to learn how to play it. So, if you like easy playable space-strategy games, go and buy it. Download playable demo (166MB).

hmm....the voice acting is truly horrible, and sometimes, playing on "hard" is like playing on "impossible". i still finished it on hard, it took me allmost 50 hours..

Very pretty graphics, gameplay fun ? no very dissapointed still needs work

i think the game should give you more control over the file it uses for the game. For Example, on Easy you get more HP and RP, but in Hard, you get more EXP, but less of everything else, it would be cool if you could play on Easy and get Hard EXP points. But when i try it, it hangs when it loads.

Best space graphics since Freelancer and Descent FreespaceII. But there are some problems with gameplay tough.

ORB sucks, it has a pathetic control system.

Graphic is really good I think but I have been bored with the genre of the game like this since long time ago

I dunno... eye candy and all that aside, I actually liked the overall gameplay in Hegemonia better than that of Homeworld. For one, there's a lot more strategy/tactics involved: there are true chokepoints (wormholes), you can target basic ship components, production of capital ships isn't limited to a single virtually defenseless slow-moving hulk known as the mothership... I haven't played ORB yet, so I don't know how they compare... Anyway, a one of the features I liked about Hegemonia was the ability to control/develop planets, something that I had trouble finding in space RTSes. Secondly, I like the fact that the first player to build a giant fleet of battleships doesn't necessarily win. You can force the armada to split up, ambush it, etc. Stealth is much more easily attained in Hegemonia, even late in the game. Guerilla warfare is, for once, not a total waste of ships! Related to that is the inclusion of spies, which you can use to sabotage blockades and planetary defenses, detect other spies, steal another player's money, or, key to wanton strategists, reveal the location of enemy fleets and bases within a system. To top it off, there are heroes which you can acquire and assign to certain tasks, giving you bonuses in their specialty. But as always, there are a few things left to be desired. The single player could've been better plotwise("Ha! I've defeated the threatening race! Oh no, An even greater threat! Followed by an even greater greater threat!")Voice acting could've been better in some instances. There are some balancing issues, for example I thought fighters could be picked apart way too easily, especially considering their inability to harm a planet's inhabitants. Also I had trouble pausing/unpausing the game before I patched it, so as always, patch the game as soon as you get it! IMO, Hegemonia is like a cross between SW:Rebellion and Homeworld, so if you're a fan of either, or want a little more strategic punch, try the demo (though the demo IS pretty limited, just use it to judge basic, basic, basic gameplay.) If anything, it's a perfect game to tie you over until HW2.

Does any one know how to start and PLAY a single player skirmish with a fake cd-key (and I'm not talking about multiplayer, but pure custom skirmish)?

TruStrategistposted - Dec, 14 2003 - 01:52
yeah, i know how to---actually BUY the game...

Awsome game, wish there was more planets and solar systems, and that traveling to other solar systems wasn't limited to the worm holes. The game does have it's gliches, but with the patches it fixes most problems, and with the Heg Rebalance Mod, the game becomes MUCH MUCH MORE stratigic, each type of ship has it's definite stratigic advantage, FIGHTERS ARE AWSOME, they are much harder to hit by other ships, and can be very deadly in several groups, however you need larger ships to attack planets, but fighters are still good scouts, in and out. Oh yeah about the cross between SW:Rebellion and Homeworld? I agree with Homeworld, but Star Wars? No, more like Masters of Orion 2... And about the fake cd key... it cost me $15 to buy the game used, surely you can gather that up and buy it.

FREELANCER 2 IS OUT!!!!!! its called the IonCross Total War. Rheinland is at war with Liberty, with the Red Hessians and the Liberty Rogues stuck in the middle. Team up with Teamates and assault enemy Cruiser convoys and enemy trade routes. www.ioncross.com Word of warning though. This mod totally changes the systems, so it truely is like a sequel. Loads of new weapons, VERY WELL balanced fighters. No more uber fighter that everyone gets. a light fighter can take out a heavy, and a heavy can take out, just as easily, a light. Its all about ur style. Also, the mod requires ALOT of teamwork. The AI is VASTLY improved. Don't even THINK about taking on a GUNBOAT alone. Don't even THINK about traveling for long times into open space alone. You'll get fragged. The mod also introduces the stock market. Buy stocks from your favorite Freelancer companies, and hope they do well! The market is based on successful company trade runs, how often they are attacked, how often they are supported by players, etc. Lives count! you got one. You die, you lose EVERYTHING except ur luquid cash. after about 2 deaths, ud better not die. Because your going to start over in the newby land. So fly straight, and fly with a buddy. Check it out guys. This is, the sequel. So many hours have been spent perfecting this mod, its not even funny. And with updates, upgrades, bug fixes on a daily bases, this truely is a very well supported mod. It even has its own ventrillo server. If you've got any questions about his mod, email. BTW, i'm not a developper or anything. I found this mod, and fell in love with it. I love is so much, i want to spread the love. You'll see me in the server using this screen name.
