Impossible Creatures
(hx) 02:17 AM CET - Feb,23 2003

Impossible Creatures (formerly known as "Sigma") is genetically enhanced 3D real-time strategy game developed by past masters Relic (makers of Homeworld) and published by Microsoft. In the year 1937, young journalist Rex Chance receives a letter from his long lost father, asking him to come to a remote chain of mysterious islands in the pacific where he has been working. Apparently his father worked on a secret program (Sigma Technology) which involved creating new life forms by mixing animal DNA, thus creating hybrids. The game begins with you as Rex Chance flying to reunite with your father. However, instead of finding your dear old dad, you instead stumble on a mean individual and an army of evil genetic hybrids - amphibious gorillas, flying rhinos and huge scorpions with wolf like features. They are trying to kill you. You must make impossible creatures of your own and battle the evil forces of Upton Julius (the bad guy in this game, who worked for your dad).

The gameplay is basically the same as any real time strategy game, you collect resources (though the only resource that you really have to worry about going out to get is coal), build armies, research technology, and eliminate the enemy. Anyone who has ever played an real-time strategy title in the past will be familiar with the overall game concept, plus everything is a simple mouse point and click. The revolutionary aspect of Impossible Creatures is the ability to create your own units. To be able create your own beasts you need to collect DNA samples from wild animals that roam the environment. In your objectives, you'll see a list of the DNA available to you in a level. When an animal's DNA is collected, you'd be able to create your own unique army by combining over 50 real-world animals (elephants, dragonflies, killer whales, panthers, spitting cobras, grizzly bears, snowy owls, piranhas, eels...) into thousands of creatures, offering many hours of fun as you explore these "impossible creatures". There are land, sea, and air units, although the air units are not quite as effective as the others, as they seem to lack speed during combat and are vulnerable to anti-air towers and ranged attacks. The army building is pretty simple. You go into the Army building screens, and use the combiner. Now you pick two critters and put them together! Sadly, the actual combat isn't very satisfying. There's no formation, just swarm as many creatures as you can and hope you outnumber them. There aren't any real tactical options in commanding your forces.

Impossible Creatures offers multiplayer (up to six players) with TCP/IP over both LAN and the Internet. There are three available modes: Destroy Enemy Lab, Destroy Enemy Base, and Hunt Rex. In these game modes you are not required to hunt down the DNA of animals rather you are given access to every animal straight away.

Overall, Impossible Creatures takes us back to standard RTS gameplay which is still good fun, but I expected way more from this title. Honestly, there's nothing revolutionary except the genetic manipulation. That's why I rated the game "only" 78%. But if you enjoy a good real-time strategy games or you are looking for something a bit different in this genre, buy this game. The creativity and original design of this game makes its well worth the buy. Download playable demo (285MB).

Minimum system requirements: 500 MHz processor, 128 MB RAM, 16 MB / 3D video card, 1.5 GB hard disk space, for online play: 56.6 kbps modem or LAN

snd: 3/5 - solid, typical 1920s/1930s swing music, well done voice acting, annoying warnings and acknowledgements
gfx: 4/5 - totally 3D with relative freedom of the camera (with full 360 degrees of motion&zoom in/zoom out), colorful, nice cut scenes before each mission, effects are nothing extraordinary, but they look nice
playability: 4/5 - pretty easy, balanced and keeps things interesting, enjoyable storyline, ability to combine various animal attributes into one creature, faster paced combat style, over 20 different maps, multiplayer (LAN/Internet - built-in player-matching service called IC Online) up to 6 players, a lot of mod support, artificial population cap, actual combat isn't very satisfying (very few real tactical options), some AI issues
genre: 3D RTS
release: January 2003
developer: Relic Entertainment
publisher: Microsoft
Very_good

I have played this game for about 3 months now (counting beta) and I am very pleased with this game. IC has awesome graphics (extremely well polished), great camera control, simple, fun and intuitive game play and a lot of strategy. And even without formations, IC is full of tactics, despite what the reviewer said. Formations are only one part of tactical gameplay. Intelligent use of natural terrain advantages is essential in this game as well as micromanagement of units that would otherwise die if left to their own devices. After you play this game a while and shed your old expectations (I'm an old SC fan and miss booming tanks, whirling turrets, etc), you begin to relish fighting with these mutant creations. It's awesome listening to the powerful sounds your mutants make as they trample your opponents into the ground and watching their visual effects while utilizing specials like frenzy or leap attack or while under the influence of auras like herding or packhunter. I love the powerful "boom" of a siege tank push or reavers smashing marines into red goo and I can tell you all that IC is just as thrilling, if not more so, in the feeling you get from spreading carnage with your favorite units. Very satisfying and extremely addictive game.

Thanks to 'Timeless_OMO', I agree with you entirely!

ya and you both work for the company developing the game or beta testing. What can you expect. :|

LOL. I'm a gamer. Nothing more. Beta was available to all who wished to download it. I wasn't even interested in the game until I started playing it a while and at the time I was playing WC3, another game I like immensely. Maybe I work for Blizzard, too, eh? - Timeless Freakshow

the screenshot showing isnt very impressing.. I cant judge the gameplay and i dont plan too, so as far as i get is to download it or play it at my friend's place if they ever have this game. I have better use of money than to blow it on some games with new ideas and EA isnt prodicing anything good recently...

This game is like a book of cliches. you get all the BS you want but nothing of great action. UMMM WHERE DA MONEY GO?

Teddybearposted - Apr, 27 2003 - 11:03
As newbie gamer(surely not my age)its the first game i really liked and kept playing till the end.A game should be easy to handle and doesn't have the need to have 20 different keys to be used for each action.Where is the fun of the game when you have to concentrate you more on the keyboard than watching the game itself. Finally somethingelse than crashing cars and blasting off eachothers head. There's alot more in it if you give it a fear chance.

The ideas behind this game are solid, the graphics are better than alot of those crappy popular games like RTCW and other boring, overplayed, overhyped, and overused games..some people need to get real about what they're playing, sure, this concept is as old as all the rest, but at least it's done in a somewhat fresh style, unlike same ol' same ol' WC and RTCW type games.

If you like creatures then make your own. This game sucks. whY? ooooo you really want to know ok i tell you. Its called impossible creatures right? well all the creatures in the game suck. they are all just plain regular animals no special monster here expect for the one you find in the bathroom. ya sure they might look at bit different but when it comes down to showing whats in that bitchx bottle all you got is plain old cookies. its a crappy attempt at starcraft remake. THERE IS NO STRATEGY TO THIS GAME!!!!!!. the techinical detail are ok but the game concept is poooor. Somepeople seem to think the formations make a big difference well it does not . its one of those "paper" ideas that never really gets implemented in a good way. when i played this game i think "SUCKERT" ,"SUCKERT" why? cause ya go down and down and down and then it pops back in your face again with a 2% change.then they say its orginal. hey people bubble gum is orginal this game is not.

all i know is if someone gave this game to me as a present i would slap them in the face!

®ß¥!!posted - Jan, 28 2004 - 21:08
i love this game its not starcraft or anything but its a lot more interesting than just having a race to get to the highest lvl units and swarming in this game a well built low lvl army stands a chance against just about anything all you people that are ripping on it are expecting a clone of SC or WC and thats just stupid...

How do you make your own Animals?

Will there be an IC 2? If so, what are all of the details? If not, make MORE downloads!
