Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six 3: Raven Shield
(hx) 08:06 PM CEST - Apr,20 2003

Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six 3: Raven Shield, the third installment in the series, is a tactical squad-based tactical shooter set in the year 2005. The Rainbow Six series revolves around the exploits of team Rainbow, a multi-national group of counter-terror experts under the command of the United Nations. In many countries, local police forces aren't trained or prepared to defuse situations caused by well-armed and prepared terrorist. Rainbow's mission is to go in after all the negotiations have failed and swiftly put an end to any situation. In Raven Shield Team Rainbow sees action in a number of exotic locations ranging from Norway to the Caribbean to South America. The missions locals vary from a snow covered mountain village to a grimy meat packing plant to a top floor penthouse in downtown Buenos Aires. Some missions are straight eliminate the terrorist's type action, others the more tricky hostage rescue scenarios as we know those terrorists just love shooting hostages.

Missions start out in a planning stage where you assign members of the team (you select up to 3 sub-teams to control ~ 3 persons for each team), equip them, and devise a strategy. In the planning phase you'll see top-down view of the map and you determine which team goes where and you give tactical orders and so forth. Planning the missions is quite simple with a lot of commands and orders accessible via mouse selections. During the action phase you can control any squad and any member you want (you can give them simple orders), just one at a time, the AI takes care of the rest. Additionally, the game does come with pre-planned missions, where your team/equipment and tactical data is already done for you, you just have to either watch in observer mode or assume the role of 1 operative in first person perspective while issuing your orders. Of course, if you want to take the time to plan out the mission yourself, you can completely customize your mission from scratch.

Single player portion of the game contains 15 missions, ranging from an oil refinery to a private airport, to a mansion in tropics. The missions are all unique and contain a variety of mission themes, such as the familiar but fun hostage rescue, prevent terrorists from detonating a bomb, releasing nerve gas, or destroying important data. There's also a custom mission mode, which allows you to play the campaign missions you've successfully completed. Maybe I shouldn't forget to mention (for those of you who never played any Rainbow Six game) , that Raven Shield's gameplay is focused on stealth and one-shot-kill realism, so you will quickly find that the Quake-style FPS play - "run and gun" method won't work well in this game.Yeah, it's not a very fast paced game :P Instead, Raven Shield will make you think! If you played the previous rainbow titles you'll be right at home.

There are a total of 57 guns (including MTAR-21 9mm, Mac-11/9 9mm, Micro-Uzi 9mm, SR-2 9mm, USAS-12 12g, TAR-21 5.56mm, Type 95 5.56mm, VSS Vintorez 9x39mm, 23E 5.56mm) in the game and each of the weapons has five ratings: amount of damage, range, accuracy. Of course, all the weapons have their advantages and disadvantages but you have access to a good number of them from the outset. You can also customize weapons using four different weapon attachments: sound suppressor, thermal sniper scope attachment, high capacity magazine, and mini-scope. For game balancing reasons, each weapon can only have a one attachment at a time.

The multiplayer portion is by far the best of the game. You have the ability to do all the standard DM/TDM, or you can also play cooperatively against AI controlled terrorists. Both modes are great fun.

Overall, Raven Shield is a fantastic tactical shooter. If you are a fan of the Tom Clancy series of games this is a must for your collection. Here are links for SP Demo ~ MP Demo.

System requirements:
Minimum: 800 MHz Pentium III, AMD Athlon, or equivalent, 128 MB RAM (XP users: 256 MB required), 64MB DirectX 8.1b compatible graphics card, DirectX 8.1b compatible sound device, CD-ROM/DVD-ROM 16x or faster (not recommended for use with CD-RW drives), 1.7 GB HDD space

snd: 5/5 - excellent Bill Brown's music, tasty&realistic sound effects, footsteps on various surfaces are convincing, stunning implementation of EAX, mediocre voice-overs (all terrorists speak English)
gfx: 4/5 - exceptionally well done (Unreal engine), great effects and models, Ragdoll physics rocks, (though sometimes the bodies end up in impossible, contortionist poses), no death animations
playability: 4/5 - true realistic tactical combat, multi-player portion if by far the best of the game, challenging AI (especially if you choose high realism settings), easy planning interface, weak storyline, can't climb over small obstructions, a number of small flaws

One of the big problems with the games is...Its supposed to be realistic...Try shooting a light out. :(

Erbozposted - Apr, 20 2003 - 20:15
I found this game way too difficult. There is no fun if you need to control 6 soldiers at the same time. Nor is it fun to remember all 312 different keyboard combinations. Shite!

This game is an absolute corker, compared to other games of a similar strain. Glass windows shoot out (even if the lights do not) leaving you free for some tactical flashbanging and or gassing. The controls are simple when setup correctly, with ordering the team about being a real doddle. What sucks about this game so far is more on the technical side. The Online play is plagued with login bugs, it was before the 1.1 patch was released that was made to address the issue, and it is still a problem now. I can understand the need for CD-Key checks to hinder the pirates, but when they are stopping geniune copy owners from playing it's a bit too much.

I personally like playing Raven Shield. You can play the game with or without pre-mission planning. Hard and fast or stealthy and deadly. On the first mission i had 3 teams of 3, with a plan made because managing & keeping track of teams in the game without a plan is tricky & i liked to make a hard assault on terrorists from different angles, so that they wouldnt know where to shoot. But after restarting the first mission many times (because i did not want any of my team members dead just in case i needed them later on in the game) i played (without a plan, because i only had 1 team) as a sniper and picked off most of the terrorists with a head shot, with 3 assault team members for fire support and completed the first mission without losing any of my team members. (Tip: Noisy weapons attract terrorists, equip your weapon with a silencer, if you want. As [DvA]Rom mentioned about shooting out lights, i tried. But after thinking about it, i suppose they didnt enable this because if you saw a terrorist in a room, you would shoot them rather than waste your bullets on shooting out lights. In response to Erboz's comment, Ive only started playing on recruit level, it is difficult, but its not impossible to complete. In my opinion, the keyboard controls are not that difficult to get used to if you familiarise yourself with them in training for a bit. ** i cant comment about multiplayer because im on 56k, which is supported but not recommended, so it says at spec requirements at www.raven-shield.com a broadband connection is what you should have if you want to play multiplayer (you may need to update raven shield with the patch to solve a few major problems before playing multiplayer ** Everything is about the game is great. However i would have liked to have the terrorists randomly positioned every time you restart a mission (like that in swat 3) and sometimes when i throw a grenade and accidentally ends up where me and my team are, they dont move, they just wait to get blown away. A good game overall, in my opinion.

Raven Shield is a GREAT game. Singleplayer is good, but you need patience to learn how to play the game (no Quake-style here). No jump may suck but it means no CS-bunny hopping!!! :) Multiplayer LAN is *THE* killer-app. when you start using the heartbeat sensor/jammer, it adds an incredible dimension to the gameplay... teamplay also becomes worthwhile! not everyone's cup of tea, but better than 84% i think (with 1.1 patch)

It's a great game, the only thing I can say I hate is the MP. I hate the ingame browser. I'd rather play through GSA or ASE and join servers. It's better than most games I guess for ingame browser but I still prefer my own server browser. Also I find the game really lags bigtime online in games even when I have 60ping. Single player was smooth as silk. Other than the above, it's a good game, kinda like SWAT 3 on steroids.

Several things here.. the upcoming 1.2 patch will add All Seeing Eye game browser support. I am not sure on single player if the terrorists positions change or not, but play it on CO-OP mode with a couple of friends online and the terrorist postions DO change. On many occassions there were 2 or 3 terrorists where there was only 1 for the previous 3 or 4 rounds etc! Sometimes you expect one and he isn't there, makes you think. Go through the tutorial and all the controls are explained to you step by step - so if you think it is too difficult DO SOME TRAINING thats what it is for! It isn't quake for sure, GOOD! but online you can ave some amazing fast rushes or slow sneaking whatever tactic you like all works - especially if you use voice comms like Teamspeak and play as a team. I would rate it 90%

This is a good game, the best thing i think is the vast amount of guns that are in the arsenal, lots of Handguns, SMG'z, and rifles to pic from. the only complaint i got is your team, wen u give them orders they tend to run out in the open and get shot, or open doors and get shot, also the time it takes to switch weapons and items takes way to long. takes some gettiong used to at first but still a great game

rejectEdposted - Apr, 21 2003 - 20:22
Superb game. Replay value in single player is the best of any game I've ever played. Weapons are a joy to use. And as someone who never could get into these types of games, I think it's GOTY so far. As for the dimwit who recommends Vietcong's graphics, I seriously think you require a new vid card. Vietcongs weapons textures look like something pre-Quake.

Biggest misstake of series : Heartbeat sensor. Stupidest game ruiner I've ever seen, they may aswell have introduced a rocketlauncher for all I care, ruins the tactical momentum in the game equally much.

tacops : Heartbeat sensor. Stupidest game ruiner I can see u only play on easy and not the harder once because when u go up a level then u will see that the heartbeat sensor can be mistaken :P

I've got a watercooled P4 2.8GHz, 512MB RAM, Radeon 9700Pro, ADSL and the thing that wrecks this game is that my machine still lags big time on multiplayer. A patch is needed because UT2K3 and AArmy use the Unreal engine and they don't lag at all. Game is great but this needs to be fixed otherwise the fun of multiplay on this game will be gone forever! FixIt!

Your friends dies easly , your plan must be perfect ( I'm playing in Veteran), repeating more times a mission even if you did it perfect is quite frustrating...

sealposted - May, 19 2003 - 16:27
its probably the most realistic shooter game existing. How could someone compare it with Quake?who cares if graphics isn't at viecongs level...who cares if light dont burst...if u want this play soldier of fortune...terrorist r so inteligent, fast and move in unexpected way.patch1.2 has solved the few bugs.AI is smart...they shoot well, fast and audio puts u just in the game.no fantasy like quake or unreal...just reality in videogame.
