Sony Interactive Entertainment has released the PlayStation 4 system software update version 8.00 today, which includes changes to Party and Messages features, new avatars, updated parental controls, and more.
Main Features in the System Software Update

  • The following changes have been made to (Party) and (Messages).
    • When starting a party, you can now choose to create a new group or select an existing group. When you create a new group, it’ll be saved even after the party has ended. You can start a new party with the same members by selecting the group that you previously created.
    • You can now use your groups across (Party) and (Messages). You can send messages to a group you created for a party, or start a party with a group you’ve messaged with.
    • For groups of three or more members, the group owner can now remove members from the group. The group owner is the player that created the group.
    • For groups of just you and one other player, you can no longer change the group name or image. Only the name and image of the other player displays.
    • (Messages) has been added to the screen during parties. When you select between members of your group. (Messages), you’ll see the messages exchanged between members of your group.
    • The public / private settings for parties have been removed. Only members of the group can join the party.
    • You can now change your party settings from the options menu that displays on the screen when you select (Party). You can also manage your party connection settings when you select [Party Voice Chat Connection], which has been added to the party settings.
    • Members of your party can now see when your mic is muted.
    • You can now join parties even if there are members that you’ve blocked. When you join a party with a blocked member, or when a blocked member joins the party, you’ll receive a notification. In addition, the blocked member won’t be notified that you’ve blocked them.
    • Play Together sessions can no longer be started during a party. For online multiplayer games, you can start a game session from within the game.

The four iPhone 12 models and their differences:
  • iPhone 12: The same 6.1-inch screen size as the iPhone 11, but upgraded to the same "Super Retina XDR" OLED technology as the Pro models. The new design fits a 6.1-inch display into a body that's lighter and 15% smaller. The secondary camera is a 12 megapixel "ultra wide" camera similar to that on the iPhone 11. Apple is offering five color options: black, white, Product Red, green, and blue. Available October 23rd for $799.
  • iPhone 12 mini: All the features of the standard iPhone 12 in a smaller body with a 5.4-inch display. Apple claims it's the smallest, thinnest, lightest 5G phone in the world. Available November 13th for $699.
  • iPhone 12 Pro: Similar in size to the standard iPhone 12 with a 6.1-inch display. As with last year's Pro models, the main step-ups are better materials (stainless steel and milled glass) and the addition of a telephoto camera. Xbox Series backward compatibility detailed - console
(hx) 05:06 PM CEST - Oct,13 2020 - Post a comment / read (1)
Microsoft has detailed backward compatibility for Xbox One and compatible Xbox 360 and Xbox games on Xbox Series platforms, including auto high-dynamic range, and higher frame rates and enhanced visuals on select titles.

Games Play Best on Xbox Series X and Series S

Backward compatible games run natively on the Xbox Series X and S, running with the full power of the CPU, GPU, and SSD. No boost mode, no downclocking, the full power of the consoles for each and every backward compatible game. This means that all titles run at the peak performance that they were originally designed for, with significantly higher performance than their original launch platform, resulting in higher and more steady framerates and rendering at their maximum resolution and visual quality. Backward compatible titles also benefit from significant reductions in load times due to the massive leap in performance from our custom NVME SSD at the heart of the?Xbox Velocity Architecture.

Auto HDR for Everyone

Modern games often implement high dynamic range (HDR) to improve overall visual quality. HDR allows a game to render a much larger range of brightness values and colors. This gives an extra sense of richness and depth to the image when compared to a standard dynamic range (SDR) image. For example, the light from a flashlight looks much brighter and red flowers look much more vibrant.

However, thousands of Xbox games shipped before HDR was first introduced with Xbox One S, and even for some Xbox One games, developers simply didn’t have the development resources or time to implement HDR. With Xbox Series X and Series S we are introducing a new feature named Auto HDR. Auto HDR automatically adds HDR enhancements to games which only shipped with SDR. Auto HDR enhances the visual quality of an SDR game without changing the original artistic intent of the game. Auto HDR is implemented by the system so developers don’t have to do any work to take advantage of this feature. Also, since Auto HDR is enabled by the console’s hardware, there is absolutely no performance cost to the CPU, GPU or memory and there is no additional latency added ensuring you receive the ultimate gaming experience.

The below images show how Auto HDR can improve the visual quality without changing the overall look of the game. The HDR images are brighter and more colorful only in the naturally expected areas, while the rest of the image retains its original intent.

Amazing Innovations for Some of the Classics

By the time the new Xbox consoles launch this November, the team will have spent well over 500,000 hours of gameplay across the entire backward compatibility catalog to ensure your experience is the best possible, no matter which game is your favorite. Beyond the improvements all backward compatible games will see due to increased hardware performance, our team of backward compatibility engineers continue to innovate and push the limits of game preservation and enhancement to make your current game library look and play even better, at no additional cost and with no work from developers while still respecting the artistic intent and vision of the original creators.

New Technology to Double Frame Rates

Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S bring next-gen performance to your favorite games. Higher, steadier frame rates make games feel smoother, resulting in more immersive gameplay. Many improvements are the result of the custom designed processor that allows compatible games to play and leverage the increased CPU, GPU, and memory from the new consoles. In addition however, the backward compatibility team has developed new methods for effectively doubling the frame rate on select titles. While not applicable for many titles due to the game’s original physics or animations, these new techniques the team has developed can push game engines to render more quickly for a buttery smooth experience beyond what the original game might have delivered due to the capabilities of the hardware. Fallout 4 frame rate, shown below, is effectively doubled from 30 frames per second to 60 frames per second on Xbox Series S, delivering a new way to preserve and enjoy this legendary title.

Enhanced Visuals You Have to See to Believe

On the Xbox One, we were able to provide a curated list of titles that were enhanced for the Xbox One X via the Heutchy method. This allowed titles from Xbox 360 that rendered at 720p and original Xbox games that ran at 360p to play at 4K on Xbox One X, well beyond the capabilities of their original platform. The Heutchy method continues to be used to bring a variety of titles to 1440p on Xbox Series S and 4K on Xbox Series X.

mproved texture filtering is also coming to backward compatible titles on both Xbox Series X and Series S. On Xbox One X, a portion of the catalog benefited from increased anisotropic filtering, improving image quality of games. On Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, 16x anisotropic filtering has been enabled for nearly all backward compatible titles so you can experience the very best visuals the games have to offer.

Delivering on Our Promise

The backward compatibility team has been working hard to make all the games you love and remember available to you on Xbox Series X and Series S. Playing the games will be just as easy and magical as it’s always been. Simply insert your favorite backward compatible Xbox One, Xbox 360 or original Xbox disc into your Xbox Series X, install the game, and you’ll be ready to play. Your digital library will instantly appear and ready for download on the console when you sign in. If you’ve already installed your games to an external drive, you can bring that with you to the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S. This all happens with no additional cost to you. And, with cloud saves, you’ll jump right back in where you left off. For those of you still enjoying Xbox 360, cloud saves will soon be free to all Xbox 360 users, making transferring your favorite games to Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S even easier.

Preserving the games of our past is fundamental to our DNA at Xbox and our continued promise to you. Backward compatibility lets you experience your cherished gaming memories again and in new ways. Your favorite games retain everything the original developer intended, while experiencing enhancements and exciting new features. There’s no need to look back, because your games are ready to move forward with you to the next generation of Xbox.

King Arthur: Knight's Tale announced - briefly
(hx) 05:02 PM CEST - Oct,13 2020 - Post a comment
em>The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing series developer Neocore Games has announced King Arthur: Knight’s Tale, a turn-based tactical RPG planned for release on PC via Steam in Q1 2021, followed by PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series at a later date. It will be priced at $39.99. Neocore Games launched a Kickstarter campaign alongside the announcement seeking $150,000 in funding to complete the game’s development.
Based on the Arthurian mythology, King Arthur: Knight’s Tale is a turn-based tactical role-playing game—a unique hybrid between turn-based tactical games and traditional, character-centric RPGs. King Arthur: Knight’s Tale is a modern retelling of a classic Arthurian mythology story filtered through the dark fantasy tropes, a twist on the traditional tales of chivalry.

Key Features

  • Your Fights – Control a small team of heroes and fight grueling, but satisfying battles with a deeply engaging, tactical turn-based combat system. Choose from more than 30 heroes of five diverse classes and combine hundreds of skills and artifacts to assemble an efficient team.
  • Your Heroes – Gather your own Knights of the Round Table and send them on knightly quests. These heroes are the most important resources and the most complex gameplay elements at the same time. But beware! Death is always final! You must manage them at the Round Table accordingly, planning ahead before going into battles. The character progression system is designed to be as deep as in the traditional RPGs: heroes level up on unique skill trees and the complex loot system provides unique options to fine-tune their tactical capabilities. Each hero has a distinctive personality and their loyalty is constantly changing through the decisions made by the player – in certain cases they can ever leave the Round Table and turn against you.
  • Your Kingdom – See the entirety of Avalon presented on a the Adventure Map, observe all the territory, select your missions and explore various places. Management in King Arthur: Knight’s Tale focuses on rebuilding Camelot and expanding the mystical Stronghold with new buildings that each unlock various upgrades, and also offers different ways to heal up and manage the heroes of the Round Table.
  • Your Legend – Play as Sir Mordred, the former nemesis of King Arthur. Explore the mystical island of Avalon, venture on knightly quests and make decisions in various encounters where you’ll need to make moral choices, as in most RPGs, which all have impact on the story and your Morality. The end of the campaign opens up new endgame content for the bravest of all: tough new challenges appear on the map with challenging, mythic boss fights and random quests, loot, and character progression ultimately leading to the banishing of Balor, the monstrous god-king of the Fomorians himself.
  • Beyond the Legend – Complete more than 50 unique points of interest on the Adventure Map, including 20 story missions and various side quests, taking place on diverse terrains, from the dark castle dungeons to the forests of the Sidhe—built by using photoscanned environments and high-quality mocap animation, all rendered inside a modern PBR engine utilizing DirectX 12, supporting strong, atmospheric effects. Challenge 7 enemy factions, fight more than 50 types of enemy units, overcome 10 incredible boss fights throughout your quests.

Microsoft xCloud May Bypass Apple App Store with Web App - tech
(hx) 12:35 AM CEST - Oct,13 2020 - Post a comment / read (5)
Microsoft is reportedly planning to release a "direct browser-based solution" to bring their Xbox Game Pass xCloud streaming service to iOS and iPadOS devices targeting a 2021 launch according to sources familiar with the matter. Microsoft has faced numerous issues with bringing the service to Apple devices due to App Store policies requiring each game to be uploaded as a separate application for review. Microsoft has previously stated that this solution is unacceptable and they would be investigating other options, they seem to have concluded that a web app would be the best route forwards. This approach is very similar to Amazon's Luna game streaming service which will also utilize a web app for access on Apple devices.

Microsoft's gaming boss Phil Spencer told employees at an all-hands meeting on Wednesday the company is planning to bring Game Pass to Apple's iPhone and iPad, targeting 2021 for the potential release of a "direct browser-based solution," Business Insider has learned.

"We absolutely will end up on iOS," Spencer told employees, according to two people with direct knowledge of his comments. Microsoft did not comment at the time of publication. Apple has not yet responded to a request for comment.

Microsoft last month added a key new feature to Game Pass, its Netflix-style subscription service that gives Xbox and PC gamers access to a vast catalogue of games. Now, Game Pass subscribers can stream many of the included titles directly to their Android phones or tablets, no console required.

Notable by its absence at the feature's launch was support for Apple's iPhone and iPad. An Apple spokesperson told Business Insider this summer that doesn't allow for game streaming in apps like Game Pass or Google's Stadia because it is unable to review each game in the services' respective libraries.

In the last of Western Han Dynasty, the powerful prime minister of China superseded his emperor and build a new dynasty called Xin. In this year, words appeared on the boulders, stone cattles appeared in fields, and ancient tombs cracked, tremendous signs appeared, told a time of peace and prosperity will come. A peculiar bamboo slip in the crypt of Marquis of Liu was delivered to Court Astrologer’s hand.Unexpectedly, Taishi Mansion was badly damaged by a bizarre fire that night, and all his family was killed in the fire and the bamboo slip disappeared.

Squadron 42 has been, once again, delayed, no ETA - briefly
(hx) 09:37 AM CEST - Oct,11 2020 - Post a comment / read (3)
Star Citizen was first announced eight years ago today as a new Wing Commander -style space game, with developer Cloud Imperium saying it would likely be two years before its full release. A new Star Citizen Birthday AMA with Chris Roberts, Todd Papy, and Tony Zurovec celebrates the occasion with answers to questions about the project. This post features Chris Roberts addressing release plans for Squadron 42.
You're not really asking about what is being worked on Squadron 42, you really just want to know when it will be done. The best answer for your question is Squadron 42 will be done when it is done, and will not be released just to make a date but instead once all the tech and content is finished, polished and it plays great. I am not willing to compromise making a game I believe in with all my heart and soul, and even though everyone (including me) wants Squadron 42 sooner than later, it would be doing a huge disservice to everyone working really hard on the project and all of you that are looking forward to it to deliver something that isn't great.

The new roadmap will show how we are doing towards that goal and as we get closer to the end it will be more accurate but it will never be a perfect crystal ball of the future as there is always a certain amount of unpredictability in game development, especially when the game is hugely ambitious and has a very high quality bar; Red Dead Redemption 2, Last of US 2 and now Cyberpunk have all taken a lot longer than originally communicated and those projects didn't even announce a release date until very deep into their production, when most of their tech had been resolved.

We still have a ways to go before we are in Beta, but everyone on Squadron 42 is working very hard to deliver something great.
No one is surprised. I'll be shocked if this game comes out in 2030, let alone 2020.

AMD Ryzen 5000 release date, price and specs - tech
(hx) 08:16 PM CEST - Oct,10 2020 - Post a comment / read (2)
AMD has officially unveiled its Ryzen 5000 processors in an online event that really went hard in highlighting the gaming capabilities of these new processors, with CEO Lisa Su stating that “gaming begins with AMD”. The first Ryzen 5000 CPU AMD showed off was the AMD Ryzen 9 5900X, a high-end processor which will come with 12 cores, 24 threads and a 4.8GHz boost. It will have a 105W TDP. It will cost $549 when it launches November 5. Gamers can expect average performance improvement of 26% at 1080p, compared to the AMD Ryzen 3900XT, according to the company. Zen 3, if you're wondering, is the name of the architecture the AMD Ryzen 5000 processors will be based on. AMD then also showed off the monster AMD Ryzen 9 5950X, a 16-core, 32 thread CPU with a 4.9GHz boost, 72 MB L2+L3 cache, 105W TDP, which will sell at a seriously competitive $799. We also found out about the 8-core AMD Ryzen 7 5800X and the 6-core AMD Ryzen 5 5600X as well. Based on a 7nm+ manufacturing process, AMD Ryzen 5000 desktop processors could be tremendously powerful and potentially push clock speeds high enough to really make Intel hurt, especially if Team Blue stays stuck at 14nm on desktop. At the October 8 launch, CEO Lisa Su announced that the AMD Ryzen 5000 processors will all launch on November 5, 2020. Thankfully, that's not too far away at all, and hopefully stock will be plentiful, so everyone who wants one, can buy one.

AMD Ryzen 5000 price

We now know the price of AMD's Ryzen 5000 processors:

  • AMD Ryzen 9 5950X: $799 (around £620, AU$1,100)
  • AMD Ryzen 9 5900X: $549 (around £420, AU$760)
  • AMD Ryzen 7 5800X: $449 (around £350, AU$630)
  • AMD Ryzen 5 5600X: $299 (around £230, AU$420)

These are slightly higher prices than AMD Ryzen 3rd Generation chips, which also saw higher prices than Ryzen 2000. Here are the prices AMD Ryzen 3000 chips launched at for comparison:

  • AMD Ryzen 9 3950X: $749 (about £590, AU$1,080)
  • AMD Ryzen 9 3900X: $499 (about £390, AU$720)
  • AMD Ryzen 7 3800X: $399 (about £310, AU$580)
  • AMD Ryzen 7 3700X: $329 (about £260, AU$480)
  • AMD Ryzen 5 3600X: $249 (about £200, AU$360)
  • AMD Ryzen 5 3600: $199 (about £160, AU$290)
  • AMD Ryzen 5 3400G: $149 (£139, AU$240)
  • AMD Ryzen 3 3300G: $99 (£94, AU$144)

AMD Ryzen 5000 specs

We finally know the specs of the following AMD Ryzen 5000 processors:

  • AMD Ryzen 9 5950X: 16-core, 32 thread, 4.9GHz boost, 72 MB L2+L3 cache, 105W TDP
  • AMD Ryzen 9 5900X: 12-core, 24 thread, 4.8GHz boost, 70MB L2+L3 cache, 105W TDP
  • AMD Ryzen 7 5800X: 8-core, 16 thread, 4.7GHz boost, 36MB cache, 105W TDP
  • AMD Ryzen 5 5600X: 6-core, 12-thread, 4.6GHz boost, 35MB cache, 65W TDP

On paper, these AMD Ryzen 5000 specs look pretty darn excellent, combined with their affordable price tags. At the October 8 launch, AMD talked up the new CPUs performance, with the "AMD Ryzen 9 5900X [offering] up to a 26% generational uplift in gaming performance" compared to the last gen.

It also claims that the 16-core Ryzen 9 5950X has "the highest single-thread performance of any desktop gaming processor" and the "most multi-core performance of any desktop gaming processor and any desktop processor in a mainstream CPU socket."

Meanwhile, the 12-core AMD Ryzen 9 5900X, according to the company, is on average "7% faster in 1080p gaming across select game titles than the competition," which AMD claims is the Intel Core i9-10900K. This is a 10-core CPU which sold for $488 (about £400, AU$750), which is slightly cheaper than what AMD is asking for.

Windows 10 to support hardware-accelerated AV1 playback - tech
(hx) 10:42 AM CEST - Oct,10 2020 - Post a comment / read (2)
This fall, Microsoft’s hardware partners are rolling out hardware accelerated AV1 video support on new Windows 10 systems with the latest GPUs. With video consuming an ever-increasing portion of the world's internet traffic, better compression technology helps to improve video image quality while also reducing bandwidth consumption. AV1, which is developed by the Alliance for Open Media (AOM), can reach 50% better compression than H.264 and 20% better than VP9 for the same video content. Enabling hardware support for AV1 allows users to get the benefits of this improved video codec, and shifting decode work from software to hardware typically reduces power consumption and increases battery life on mobile devices.

Here are the components required to experience hardware accelerated AV1 video on Windows 10:

Once you have those pieces in place, you will see the benefits of hardware accelerated AV1 video as streaming services roll out more video content encoded with AV1.

If you want to look under the hood to see when you are receiving AV1, some streaming services have ways to show this information. For example, on YouTube you can right-click on the video and select “Stats for nerds”. When the video is AV1 encoded, you will see “av01…” in the “Codecs” line on the stats overlay.
Star Wars: Droid Control Ship Tech Demo - demo

As its title suggests, this tech demo recreates the Droid Control Ship from Star Wars Episode 1. This is the ship in which Obi Wan and Qui Con fight some trade federation droids (at the beginning of the movie). This tech demo will let you explore this environment. However, it does not feature any big fight between the Jedi and the droids.
